Eldest is the second book in the Inheritance Cycle Series written by Christopher Paolini. It was released in 2005 by Doubleday.
Plot[]
Eragon has just fought his first battle for the Varden. But his training isn't over, so he travels to the elves and looks for a mysterious teacher called the Mourning Sage (who turns out to be a dragon rider). Meanwhile his cousin, Roran, is forced to trek all the way across Alagaesia and join the varden because he is outlawed by the empire.
Eragon eventually returns to the varden and wins a second battle for them, unfortunately during the battle Hrothgar (the dwarven king) is killed by a new dragon rider who has joined the empire.
